Founded in 2001, CEIHD -- Household Energy and Health works to improve the well-being of women and children in developing countries by providing access to cleaner fuels and less polluting stoves. CEIHD promotes the use of entrepreneurial approaches to achieve its goals. The effects of cooking smoke or indoor pollution on the health of women and children around the world are tragic. At least 1.6 million die each year due to chronic exposure to indoor air pollution and many more are sickened or have their quality of life reduced. Indoor air pollution is created when solid fuels (such as wood, charcoal, coal, or crop residues) are burned for cooking or space heating in poorly vented stoves. Technologies including improved stoves, chimneys, venting, and cleaner burning fuels have been shown to reduce health risks. Too often, many poorer rural populations do not have access to these innovations at affordable prices. CEIHD seeks to catalyze the development of markets that will produce and deliver cleaner household energy solutions to these populations. We provide technical and business expertise including: evaluating household energy technologies; analyzing market conditions, consumer preferences, and pricing; finding and supporting local entrepreneurs; and identifying and eliminating systemic market barriers. The Center is developing an extensive collaborative network of community groups, financial partners, and appropriate NGOs to carry out this work. In 2004, CEIHD received funding from the Shell Foundation to provide technical assistance in monitoring and evaluation to household energy practitioners. Creating access to successful monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tools allows practitioners to understand and maximize the effectiveness of household energy interventions. CEIHD is located at the School of Public Health, Univesrsity of California, Berkeley, USA, and is supported by an advisory board of distinguished academics, practitioners, and business leaders.
