The Center for Entrepreneurship in International Health and Development was established in 2000. The mission of the Center is to promote and disseminate the use of entrepreneurial methods to improve the health of families in developing countries.

The Center is located at the University of California, Berkeley campus. CEIHD ("seed") brings the expertise of business and public health professionals to focus on problems related to the unmet need for health services and products, and to create market conditions that facilitate the reduction of indoor air pollution.

We are helping to supplement existing public and non-governmental efforts in under-served, rural and peri-urban communities. Scale is where the challenge lies for population level impact in the coming decades. Constraints on the growth of external funding will force donors to make investments in systems that better leverage external inputs.

Why use entrepreneurial methods to solve these problems? Our purpose is to create financially sustainable, modular systems that employ the skills and knowledge of local entrepreneurs as partners and eventual owners of this process. Our goal is to create a body of experience with economically and culturally appropriate systems that can be easily scaled up.

CEIHD has two divisions: Medical Products and Services,
and Household Energy and Health.
